Beat The Winter Blues



The winter blues is a general mild feeling of sadness and fatigue during those darker and colder months. You may experience a little trouble sleeping, a lack of motivation and some difficulty concentrating on normal tasks. Here are 4 ways you can get through these winter blues:




1. Uplift your mood


You can get your feel good hormones going by exercising 20 minutes a day – even if it’s just a lunch time stroll. Try to get out into nature and get some time in the sun as much as you can, both improve your mood and your general wellbeing. You can use aromatherapy to boost your mood with essential oils such as: Lemon, Sweet Orange, Peppermint and Rosemary to name a few. Or give yourself a well-deserved pamper like a nice, long, hot, foamy bath with some candles – oh and a side of chocolates!





2. Wind down routine


To improve your sleep, have a solid wind down routine. Begin your routine at least 2 hours before bed, slow down, turn down the lights and limit your technology usage. This makes sure that your body is in a relaxed state and ready to sleep.





3. Give yourself space


It’s OK to feel down sometimes. Rather than powering through and rejecting the feeling altogether, which can cause anxiety and further fatigue, simply being aware that you feel this way and just doing what you can will make all the difference. Take it easy and give yourself more breaks than normal – even if they are just 5-10 minutes. Spend some extra time alone to give yourself the time you need to realign and rebalance yourself. And take a little longer doing tasks so you are fully mindful and retaining your energy levels.





4. Ask for help


If you need help, ask for it. Generally the people in our lives are more than happy to lend a hand or an ear if you need or if you feel like you need further support, please seek professional help.



Here are 3 things you can do to give yourself a little extra care this winter:





1. Indulge in your senses


To create a richer everyday life, do things to purposefully stimulate your senses. Take the time to see and appreciate the beauty around you. Enjoy smelling those classic wintery scents such as pine and winter spices. Mindfully listen to your favourite song. Touch something soft or really taste your favourite foods.





2. Find little joys


When the weather is miserable and you are feeling down, enjoy the little things in your life that make you happy and keep actively doing them on a regular basis. It’s the little joys, the small things that you notice and do which give you the most delight and remind you to be grateful.




3. Find time for yourself


Set aside time for yourself to rebalance, realign yourself and just enjoy some peace and quiet. In this time, do the things you love, the things that make you feel like you. Reading, pampering, crafting, cooking, walking or any other hobbies which bring you happiness.
